The M1A clone of an M14 is a fun reliable and accurate rifle right out of the box and fairly available. A nice .308 AR-15 checks a lot of boxes as well.

The locking levers and springs interchange with HK parts so no big deal. The bolt head does not. If your BH is good/serviceable, you win. I also had no feeding or ejection issues with 6 different magazines I tried, including a Gen 1 20rd PMAG. My only problem was in attempting to eject an unfired round from the rifle.
